3 Ways to Recognize What is From God

In a world full of noise, confusion, and distraction, it is essential to understand the voice of our loving Holy Father. We must be attentive to hear Him. Can we discern what is truly from God? This is a vital question that many of us face in our spiritual journeys.

Our guiding scripture today is 1 John 4:8 NIV, which states, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” This verse reminds us that love is the essence of God’s nature and serves as a foundation for discerning His will. Let us delve into three key points that will help us recognize what is from God and what is not.

The Test of Love

The first way to know if something is from God is to examine whether it aligns with love. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, we read about the characteristics of love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” If a thought, action, or message promotes love and kindness, it likely originates from God. Conversely, if it breeds hatred, division, or selfishness, we can be assured that it does not come from Him.

The Fruit of the Spirit

The second point of discernment is to evaluate the fruit produced by the message or action. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us about the fruit of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” When we encounter something that claims to be from God, we should ask ourselves: Does it produce these fruits in our lives and the lives of others? If it leads to joy and peace rather than chaos and confusion, it is likely from God.

Alignment with Scripture

Finally, we must measure everything against the Word of God. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we are reminded that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” If a message contradicts Scripture or leads us away from its teachings, we can be certain it is not from God. The Bible serves as our ultimate guide and standard for truth.

As we give thought to these three points—The Test of Love, The Fruit of the Spirit, and Alignment with Scripture—we can gain clarity in discerning what is truly from God. Remember that God desires a relationship with each of us and provides us with the tools to recognize His voice amidst the clamor of life. Let us commit ourselves to seeking His guidance and wisdom in all things.
